DISCOVER BRITANNIA: In 1803, on the premises of the East India Company in Leadenhall Street, London, a Roman mosaic – dating from the 1st or 2nd century AD – was uncovered. It features Bacchus, riding on a tiger rather than the more usual spotted leopard. The mosaic was recorded, lifted in sections and then left out in the open air where its condition deteriorated. Three sections were subsequently restored and the surviving pieces transferred to The British Museum in 1880, where it now resides (should you want to take a look at it) in Room 49.
