Francoise Truffaut tried to duplicate the Hitchcock touch in a pair of films, “The Bride Wore Black” and “Mississippi Mermaid;” Brian De Palma was criticized as being a Hitchock copycat, particularly in “Obsession:” and “Psycho” was remade , shot-for-shot, using the original script, by Gus Van Sant. None of these films were particularly distinctive. Also, there were TWO different directors promoted as “French Hitchcock.” While others tried to copy his style, the master himself tried awfully hard to vary his output. This summer we will look at some of the more interesting films in “the Hitchcock style.” June 24, “Suspicion” Alfred Hichock, (1941), 99 minutes July 1, “Under Capricorn” Alfred Hitchock (1949), 117 minutes July 8, “The Third Man” Sir Carol Reed (1949), 104 minutes July 15, “Diabolique” George –Henri Clouzot (1954), 116 minutes July 22, “The Trouble with Harry” Alfred Hitchcock, (1955) 100 minutes July 29, “Purple Moon” Rene Clement (1960) 119 minutes.
