DIY: Tuina for Sinus Pain I modified some ACE Massage Cupping techniques to treat my own sinus pain & congestion. facebook/ACEMassageCupping). Massage Cupping uses suction, which is similar to the cupping & tuina techniques used in Chinese medicine. Instead of applying downward pressures, an upward traction is applied to muscles and skin. This traction helps many things, namely lymph drainage. The tiny Massage Cupping suction cups, that are used on the face, are still too big to treat the areas between the eyes on either side of the nose; and areas around the orbit. These painful areas reflect congested maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphemoid sinuses. Even the cavernous sinus, which houses blood vessels and nerves to the face, is affected by sinus congestion. Tuina is a form of Chinese medicine bodywork that uses many different therapeutic hand movements like: pressing, kneading, grabbing, pinching etc. While this sounds like torture, it feels wonderful! The pinching technique is the one I use over sinus areas that are too painful upon applied pressure. One may feel a diffuse ache referred through areas distant from the very painful point. If held, with a little traction applied in different directions, a very deep release will occur and the general sinus pain will diminish. I would recommend Massage Cupping, and Tuina for people who have chronic sinus issues due to facial injury (like I have), or anatomical anomalies. Below is an example of traditional Tuina massage to the face.
