DO NOT EAT THIS YOGURT. Read on to learn more! This morning I am meeting some of my fitness accountability group participants to share with them the clean food that I buy/recommend. This shopping trip was born from a request from one of the participants. They just were not for sure where to start when trying to making healthy nutritional changes. Throughout the 30 day accountability group they will learn more about improvements they can make because I respond to their daily food/exercise posts with suggestions. However, I understood their desire to want to get started right. I will explain to them that my goal is not for them to become perfect clean eating machines. I believe that something is healthy relative to what other choices you are comparing it to. If you think of nutrition as a sliding scale with donuts at one end and kale at the other.....there are a lot of choices in between. My goal on this shopping trip is just to slide their choices a little more toward the healthy end. What I am looking forward to the most is helping them decipher the food manufacturers marketing that presents some processed foods as healthy that are far from it. For example, last night in my group a participant was curious if their Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt was considered healthy. From the marketing it sure appears healthy with 80 calories and 12g of protein. I looked into the product a little more on the foodfact website and it gets a letter grade D because it is packed with food additive that will have you shaking your head and wondering how in the heck food manufacturers are allowed to put this stuff into our food. It actually contains (carmine) female beetle parts for coloring....yes, I said it bug parts! It also contains an artificial sweetener (acesulfame Potassium) that is 200x sweeter than table sugar and has been known to increase your risk of cancer, cause respiratory issues and make you crave sweets more.
