Daily Devotion July 24, 2013 Mark 4:38 “But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion…” Let’s take stock for a minute. Jesus has appeared on the scene, been baptized, called some disciples, preached and taught, and he has healed about five folk. A lot has happened since we began the story of Jesus according to Mark. We come to this part of the story with Jesus asleep in the middle of a storm, and the disciples are afraid. The fear of the disciples has always struck me as odd. The ones that we know about so far are men who made their living working the the waters of Galilee. They were used to the storms that would come up from time to time. They would have sailed through the rough waters that held their livelihood. No one sails into a storm on purpose and these fishermen would be no different. Yet I am sure that, from time to time, they would have been caught by the storms out on the lake. It seems odd to me that they were afraid. Yet maybe this storm was different. I don’t think that it’s any great stretch to understand that the storm in this story is more than just a storm out on a lake. The fisherman among the twelve, I believe, would have been able to manage just fine, even with Jesus asleep in the back. But the storms of life, well that’s a whole different kettle of fish. Have you ever wondered where Jesus was during the difficult times in your life? Have you ever gone to the back of the boat and found him sleeping only to have your faith questioned when you wake him up? It’s kind of an uncomfortable feeling. This story reminds us that Jesus is with us regardless of the difficulties in which we find ourselves. The picture of Jesus asleep in the back of the boat is a reminder of his presence with us even if we cannot see it at the time. I don’t know about you, but I am always “filled with awe” when Jesus utters the words, “Peace! Be still!” and the storms begin to subside. It doesn’t always happen right away but it does happen. All that I, we, have to do is remember to call on Jesus and he will still the storm. Peace, Fr. Reid
