Daily Devotional - August 26th Almost! “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped” Psalm 73:2 Asaph authored a number of Psalms during the Babylonian captivity and the primary aim of the Psalmist was to encourage and console the Israelites during these troubling times of exile. It was becoming increasingly difficult for them to accept their situation as they found themselves in such outward distress and misery, while a people much more wicked and corrupt than they, enjoyed such great prosperity and peace while they held them in bondage. Asaph found himself moved with indignation as he observed the prosperity of the wicked. He begins with an acknowledgement of the goodness of God to those who have a clean heart. He then goes on to confess that he almost disqualified himself because he acted in an undeserving manner, unworthy of one who is truly pure in heart. He admits that his feet were almost gone. Errors of heart and head soon affect the conduct. He could barely stand and as his knees seemed to be buckling like a falling wall his ability to remain upright was waning. There is an intimate connection between the heart and the feet. Asaph found that he was unable to make true progress in his effort to take the high road. His feet were unsteady under him like those of a man on a sheet of ice. His attempts at practical action were significantly weakened and he was in great danger of actual sin and a disgraceful fall. Almost gone! Not altogether but almost. The idea that wicked men were prospering adversely affected his faith to the point that he began to question God, nearly losing confidence. He was ready to find fault with divine providence; questioning the Righteous Judge of all the earth. Here God’s presence, providence, strength, safeguard and keeping is manifested. Though tempted and brought to the very brink of sin He keeps us by His grace that the temptation shall not overcome us. So do not fret when you almost slip but Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy Jude 1:24
