Dark days for Queensland as gutless LNP MPs vote to give away the farm: ETU Asset leases – worst of both worlds; loss of control, jobs, profits and higher prices ETU State Secretary Peter Simpson described the LNP MP’s unanimous vote to privatise $37 billion worth of public assets as a disgraceful betrayal of their communities and the more than 75% of Queenslanders who have consistently opposed privatisation. “What they did yesterday heralds a dark day for Queensland, the privatisation by long-term lease of our essential services will have dire consequences for Queenslanders; higher prices, fewer jobs, inferior service, lost profits and loss of control” Simpson said. “Tim Nicholls was right back in 2010 when he stated leasing was…“as good as giving away the farm”, we agree, he and the LNP want to give away the farm if re-elected, it’s up to us to stop them, the choice is clear, put the LNP last .” “We were outside the Executive Building and State Parliament yesterday urging LNP politicians to make decisions for the benefit of all Queenslanders, not the big-end of town. We know for a fact that long-term leasing has failed in South Australia, where prices are about 15% higher than Queensland, we know jobs have been slashed and profits have gone overseas, and it won’t work here either, our profitable public assets will become cash cows for overseas owners. But the LNP arrogantly ignored the will of people, and now they are trying to bribe regional Queensland with promises of regional funds, how can anyone believe them, when they have lied throughout the past two and half years?” Simpson said. “For those former National Party members who profess to look after the bush, you failed to stand up and be counted, you have betrayed the bush. To Sean Choat and others who had publicly and privately expressed their opposition to privatisation, you dogged it, when you had the chance to stand up for your communities and oppose the Brisbane-centric attack on regional Queensland you failed miserably.” “Yesterday LNP MPs voted to sell out our future, our kid’s futures and our grandkids future, through the leasing of $37 billion worth of our profitable public assets including the 100% leasing of poles and wires electricity assets they promised not to touch. They lied and they will face a massive voter backlash at the next election while going down in history as the Government that wanted to give Queensland’s farm away.” “We will be campaigning, like we have for the past two years, educating Queenslanders about the perils of privatisation pointing to interstate and international examples, while also holding this out of control Government to account for its lies and destructive betrayals, right up to the upcoming election and beyond if necessary. There will be no hiding from the Not4Sale campaign.”
