Dateline Sambhaavnaa institute, Kandhbari village, Himachal: Frankly, when I arrived here from Bangalore, I wondered what these organisers are going to make us do at Docu Charcha for f-i-v-e full days in a workshop meant to mentor aspiring filmmakers. And its last day already! Awesome feeling & a tingling excitement to have ones own little documentary work shown to 16 new friends and to get inputs & directions from the mentors. Even said I would like it to be torn apart & critiqued, but people can be kind you know:). So who can make films? Does one need pedigree or fancy degrees to turn a filmmaker? If you ask me, annybody who has a story to tell and is moved by this medium can. Films can be such a powerful way of self-expression.. Of course, the programme did have those from FTII & Delhis Jamia, but sample the rest of us in this group: A dairy technologist from Allahabad who works at a chewing gum factory in Chandigarh, a Ladakhi PhD student of sociology, an arsenic activist from near Banares, a Hyderabadi techie who has just quit his job, a woman from Sangli who is passionate about making short docu films on organic farming to inspire farmers.. And between us, in spectacular mountain settings, in a beautifully built serene institute, everyday this week over cups and cups of Himachali chai, we had Docu Charcha that turned out more fun than any chai pe charcha.. Ab itna kehna coffee hoga!
