David Loeb (1939- ) is an American composer based in New York City. He studied with Peter Pindar Stearns at the Mannes College of Music, where he now works as a composition professor. A very prolific composer, Loeb has written many solo works for all of the Western instruments and chamber works for all sorts of combinations of those instruments. Additionally, hes spent much time researching Chinese and Japanese instruments, early instruments (e.g. viols, viola da gamba), and unconventional Western instruments, all of which he integrates with the traditional Western instruments (e.g. one recent record featured a duo piece for mandolin and bass clarinet, and in the past, hes composed works for shinobue and string orchestra, shakuhachi and piano, etc...). Since the 1990s, his work has been documented with an ongoing series of CD releases on the Vienna Modern Masters label, but even that growing collection of records barely scratches the surface of his total output.
