David Seibert Receives BLM Madrean Archipelago Native Plant Center - TopicsExpress

David Seibert Receives BLM Madrean Archipelago Native Plant Center Grant Cultural anthropology Ph.D. candidate David Seibert, Conservation Director of Borderlands Restoration L3C in Patagonia, will lead a $250,000 initiative that develops public-private partnerships to address historically unprecedented scarcities of native plants, ongoing habitat loss, and economic insecurity. Specific plants are crucial for effective ecological restoration in regions disrupted by drought, wildfires, and accelerating climate change, but also for the maintenance of resilient local economies that depend upon ecosystem services. Landscape degradation will be mitigated through the creation of ecological restoration jobs, job training, and small business incubation pathways at the Center. The work will support the establishment of a non-extractive restoration economy in one of the most poverty-stricken and food-insecure regions of the country, the US-Mexico borderland counties of Arizona and New Mexico. Partners expect to extend the work into northern Mexico after early proof of concept work is complete.
