Day 1 CultureFest 2014 It unfolded like any other day in Ashland Oregon, blue skies hanging over hay colored rolling hills, while on the other side of the valley peaks of evergreens rose in a crescendo along the mountains sides and back. The air crisp the smokey haze gone and a sparkling promise floated in the air. It was not just another day at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, but the start of CultureFest. Months of planning condensed into Four days of celebrating, conversing and communing. I bounced down the street and rolled down the hill. Mind focused and body rested to get it in all day and night. The shape of thought became reality as one element materialized. As I gazed at the work of so many yess and multitudes of hands that made thought reality. I went to bed happy with key moments lingering in my mind. The image of a wall sized map peppered with tacs, string together histories and identities. The sound of voices low and loud, laughter ringing and new connections made. Universes on an out door stage singing and reciting words of pain and praise, escavating our communal soul, one rhythmic letter at a time. St. Jude crept into my very being and I gave thanks and grieved for my father all over again. I crawled into a hospital bed with Luis Alfaro and his father. Snuggled close and held their hands in my hands just so. I felt the release of all the pain...all of it. I gave thanks under the stars that hed let us into his life and invited us on this extraordinary journey. This first day of CultureFest saw me strolling home after a debrief and shit talking session at Martinos... A happy and satiated somebody ready for sleep and another day of magical moments.
