Day 17, 11/5/2014 Yoga Sutra 1.12 – “Control over the mind’s fluctuations comes from persevering practice and nonattachment.” As I revisit the Yoga Sutras, I am reminded of the role of “gaining control” over “the mind” in the practice of yoga. In other words, I am reminded of the necessary practice of concentration and meditation in yoga in order to “align” the body-mind-spirit. Personally, one of the things I have been working on is “self-regulation,” which for me means to “consciously pause my reactions in the grip of emotions”…if I am out of “alignment” and my mind (ego) has me wrapped up in the grip of emotions, then I have limited ability to consciously respond to an emotional or stressful situation. However, through persevering practice of working with the fluctuations (the emotionally based thoughts/beliefs) of my mind, I can “respond in a specific way.” And thus, rather than “take control” I can “receive control” – and there is a difference.
