Day 529 Leonitis - There he is all loaded up and ready for his adventure! Then the second picture....what does every feral dog do when being in a house for the first time in their lives? Why watch Family Guy on TV of course. Today was another wet and sort of blah day. No change to the normal schedule really although Leo started to wonder why everyone was walking by and staring at him...Im sure he felt self conscious and was wondering what was up, especially when we put 2 collars on him. Leo never wears a collar unless hes going on a walk. He has proven in the past that he can get pretty much any collar off and chew it up so he doesnt wear one unless hes going somewhere. Me, being the paranoid one of the group (sigh), insisted that he wear 2 collars, one that we attached the leash to and one to have on just in case that has his information on it. Worse case scenario if he somehow got off the leash hed at least still be wearing a collar with his info on it. Once he had those collars on he knew something was up and being the smart boy he is he started putting two and two together and realized he must be going somewhere so by the time we were ready he had gotten himself a bit worked up. He was very nervous leaving the building as we never walk him after dark. He crouched down low to the ground and his tail was tucked. We got to the car and Jenifer opened up the back and Leo hit the ground and shut down. We let him lay there a minute or two and collect himself (ignoring him) then got him up and tried to get him to jump into the car. He was not cooperating although I didnt think he would be. He does pretty well going into the back seat of a car but we were asking him to jump up into the back of the SUV which is a pretty decent jump. After a couple of failed attempts to get him to jump we did get him to put his front feet up on the Jeep and then after some encouragement he did attempt to use his back feet to jump but he way underestimated how high it was and Jenifer had to catch him half way and more or less shove him the rest of the way into the back of the Jeep and into the crate. Once he was in the crate he did well, he was standing tall and looking around and only got a little nervous when someone was walking by on the street while we were getting him settled. Jenifer advises he did great on the hour long ride home and pretty much just curled up and laid down the whole ride home. Once they got home he jumped right out of the car and immediately went over to the closest tree and peed. She said he lead her up the driveway standing tall, not crouched down and walked right up the steps to the house but then chickened out when he got to the door and got super nervous again. She brought him inside and he met 3 of her dogs and did fine with them. She put him in his kennel waited about 10 minutes then got him out again and they went back outside and walked around then she brought him back into the living room and walked him around and let him hang out a little then put him back in his crate. She is making his crate the safe place just like we did here at the facility with his run. She likely wont do much more with him tonight other then going out to potty for a few minutes. Tomorrow will begin the real work of having him integrate into the home and meet the rest of the dogs and the cat and the horses....yes Jenifer has horses. I wish I was there to see how Leo reacts to something bigger than he is....ha. All is well, our big boy is doing great! Couldnt be more proud of him! More tomorrow!
