Day Three... I am grateful for the fact that I found a teaching - TopicsExpress

Day Three... I am grateful for the fact that I found a teaching job right out of college, and that I was so lucky to launch it in the Schenevus Central School District! I remember going down for the interview with a good friend from Buffalo, where I was starting my grad work. She was leaving the area, so I was helping her pack and dropping her off in Syracuse on the way back. I was up a good part of the night, and changed into my interview clothes in a rest stop on the NY State Thruway, but still got the job! I will forever be indebted to Jim Brown, Ginny Graver, and Bill Feder for choosing me, and to the the school board for hiring me. I was so fortunate to have mentors in the middle school faculty of James Wickham, Rich Myers, Ed Shultis and Bob Parmerter, and will always be thankful for my partners in crime, Kathleen Irish McVinney and Pat Langan for pushing me to excel, especially in the area of literacy. Mary Mulbury, Skip West, Carolyn Fallis, Sally Woods, and so many more were awesome examples of collegiality as well. A good part of my teaching soul still resides in those mountains. I am also grateful that I was able to get hired by the Ramsey Board of Education. I had 12 years of experience by that time, and they were willing to pay me for all of them. I have been able to make new friends and forge new collegial relationships, as well as some great friendships with the parents of students I have had. I am especially grateful for the current third grade team of Beth Papaz, Debbi Dunne, Dan Royce, and Traci Tabulov for their friendship and collaboration. I have had terrific principals and superintendents through the years who have inspired and guided me. Special thanks go out to Jim Brown and Joe Colistra, my first principal and superintendent at Schenevus, Tom Jennings, and to Lynn Mintz, Selig Lewitz and Bruce deYoung for hiring me in Ramsey, and to Susan Morton and Gina Aliano for their support and leadership in making Tisdale the special school it is.
