Dear Daddy, #4 Music By definition music is the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony and rhythm. The Urban dictionary says that music is indefinable by words alone. Its not only something you hear but what you feel. Its something your soul can reach out and touch. Complex or simple, fast or slow, loud or soft. Its what you feel, or it could be your method of escape or it could just keep you alive. All music is miraculous. Music is one of the few activities that involves using the whole brain. Did you know it heals? Music causes the body to release endorphins to counteract pain. Even though I made fun of moms elevator music, its been proven that listening to just 30 mins of classical music every day significantly reduces high blood pressure. It even boosts the immune system. Scientist say listening to music or singing can decrease levels of stress-related hormone cortisol. Higher levels of cortisol can lead to a decreased immune response. Music enhances intelligence, learning and IQ. I could talk on this subject for hours. Your love of music was instilled in me. I always loved listening to you play the piano. I remember asking you once why you played and your response was Well, my mother, your mamaw made me learn. But it helps me relax and think through things. Do you remember Pastor Rod Loy bringing the new keyboard to the house so you could practice on it and record songs on it? Even that last week you had us play praise music continuously. I always thought is was awesome that you didnt just love one type of music. You loved Jazz, Gospel, Quartet, Christian Pop and Classical (or what I always called elevator music). Music has helped me through losing you. Its crazy how a song can speak right to your core. It doesnt even have to have words to stir up emotions. I think my favorite memory was playing chopsticks on the piano one evening (cause that was all I could play) and you sat down next to me and added a whole song to it while I played. Thats one of the times where I really felt connected to you. I also remember one evening a guy had broken my heart. I was in the living room crying. You came and snuggled up next to me, said why dont you just marry your ole dad and stay here forever!, then you put on the Jungle Book and sang all the songs crazy until I was laughing. I cant imagine my life without music. The world would be a lonely place without it. Thank you for recording hours and hours of you playing the piano and singing. A dear friend is putting them on CD for us so we can have them forever. Your love for the piano and your talent in playing was so awe inspiring. Now you are playing with the angels, enjoying music we can only dream of. The one song you requested to be sung at your funeral was It is Well With My Soul. I cant listen to that song without tears in my eyes. Its the one song that has come to have so much meaning to me. For one, you requested it; but after watching all you went through for you to say It is well with my soul speaks volumes about your faith and love for your Heavenly Father. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul Your faith has finally been made sight. This song says it all It really is Well with your Soul. You are no longer in pain, no longer sick. You are healthy and whole and with your Lord and Savior. I love you Daddy and you are healed!
