Dear Dr. Miller, I appreciate your viewpoint, but I disagree for - TopicsExpress

Dear Dr. Miller, I appreciate your viewpoint, but I disagree for the following reasons: 1. There are NO true ebola experts, and some of our public health officials have already been incorrect about ebola 2. Like SARS, ebola can sometimes be spread by coughing, sneezing, spitting, kissing, and other means of airborne or close personal contact. Ebola is far more contagious than the diseases that CDC commonly deals with, namely syphilis and HIV. I worked with these 2 STDs as a 12-year employee of NC DHHS epidemiology division. Ebola is more comparable to SARS in its transmissibility. 3. There is no inherent right to travel to the USA; visitors from many nations must apply for a visa and receive approval to come here. 4. I do agree that, hopefully, like the SARS outbreak in China, this West African ebola outbreak will eventually burn itself out, but many people have become infected so far, and many have died. Ebola is far more deadly than SARS or MERS, with a much higher mortality rate. 5. Self-reporting will not work for most people, especially if they are not medically-trained with high ethics. The sad case of Mr. Duncan, who lied about his exposure to ebola, is evidence that people cannot be trusted, especially when they are desperate. 6. This strain of ebola seems unusually contagious compared to other strains, at least at first glance. 7. I support libertarian principles on most issues, especially personal freedoms, but life and death matters, and protection of our citizens from dangers, whether natural or man-made, is a legitimate function of government.
