Dear Friends & Family out there in Facebook Land, I was recently tagged in a post that I found objectionable. I politely expressed that I didnt agree with their opinions. So let me be perfectly clear to all and feel free to remove me if you wish. I am a 48-y/o straight fat white man from the South. I believe that all are entitled to their opinion, whether it be religion, politics, or life. I don’t care if you are white, black or purple; Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or Atheist; Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Tea Partier, or Communist; straight, gay, or bi; female, male, or trans; and more importantly if you like me or not. The Americas were not founded by Christians, in fact, humans discovered the Americas thousands of years before Christ was even born. This nation, as we know, was founded by Christians who were tired of being persecuted for their beliefs then started forcing their beliefs onto the native population. We have the “separation of church and state”, this phrase used by Thomas Jefferson and others expresses an understanding of the intent and function of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Christianity is not the only religion being practiced throughout the world. And it is not the foundation of our laws and constitution, even though the men who drafted and signed it were Christians. The Christian Bible, Quran, Torah, Vedas and Kama Sutra amongst others were all written by humans. Were they influenced by a supreme being or a really enlightened person? We may never know. And when we do, we will be dead so we won’t be able to communicate that back to those still living anyway. Let that one sink in. For me personally, I was raised Christian, but I believe in evolution. My children are Catholic and my wife is Atheist. I am a registered Republican, but I vote Democratic/Liberal. My most influential religious teacher is a Lesbian who is the North American Moderator for her Christian-based church (basically, she is the pope here in the states). I have nieces and nephews who are white, Hispanic, and black. My soon to be born grandchild is bi-racial, and neither of my kids are married. I have very good friends who are straight/gay, conservative/liberal, and smart/dumb. So I really don’t care what you believe as long as we enjoy each other’s company. What I follow is what I follow. Whether you call it the “Golden Rule” or “Christ’s Commandment” it is to love my fellow human beings for all their strengths and faults. I don’t judge someone by their appearance but how they treat me and those around me. I will always respect your opinion even if it conflicts with mine. I will not force my opinion on you if you don’t force yours on me.
