Dear Friends, Last Week we share tips on taking care 1 - 3 months full term baby. Today, we share with you the tips of caring your premature baby. Any Baby born before the 37th week of gestation is considered premature (preemies). Some preemies may need to admit into Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU provides specialized care for preemies as they have had less time to grow and develop in the womb. The length of stay in the NICU will depend upon several factors, such as Medical stability, consistent weight gain, the ability to rally ingest milk, and body temperature. Once your baby is ready to be discharged from hospital, parents should pay higher attention and extra effort in taking care of the preemies. Preemies have a higher risk for various problems such as apnoea (breathing paused during sleep), vomiting, choking and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Sleeping: As preemies brain is not as fully developed at birth as other full-term infants, you may expect your baby to sleep more than other full-term infants. You are advised to put him to sleep in either the lateral (on the right or left side) position or on this back. Prone position should be avoided to reduce SIDS. Bathing: Preemies have sensitive skin that gets dry quickly. To decide whether to give your baby a sponge bath or a tub bath, frist look at the umbilical cord. If it is attached or there is some oozing or bleeding from the site, then give your preemies a sponge bath. Once the cord have healed nicely, then the choice is yours to either sponge bath or tub bath. Crying and Hypersensitivity: It is normal for preemies to cry for up to 3 hours a day by 6 weeks after birth. Too much light, sound, touch, movement or even too quiet can easily disturb your preemie. try to create a more calming environment and hold him close to you as much as possible. Feedings: Preemies (even full term baby) need 8 to 10 feedings per day, with not more than 4 hours between each feeding. Remember to avoid infant dehydration is a must, never go longer than 4 hours between feedings. If your baby wets 3-4 nappies daily ( wet diapers is about 1oz of water poured onto a new diaper), then you can be reassured that he has had enough milk consumption. As a mother to Preemies, for the first few weeks, you should provide breast milk, but should not too engrossed with direct latch. The method you use should depends on the condition of your preemies, as their health condition is weak and lungs may not fully developed. The most important is to ensure your preemie able to consume your breast milk, either expressed breast milk or direct latch. Keep Your Preemie Away From Exposure To: 1. Diseases and Smoke (To Those Parent Who Smoke, Better Stop And Quit Smoking Immediately). As Preemie immune system is weak, thus giving preemie a good environment to enhance the immune system and develop his immature lungs. 2. Family members and friends who are ill 3. Public places during the first several weeks after birth , and avoid exposure during colder or rainy reasons. Healthy Baby Happy Parents Thank you very much.
