Dear Mr Alex Honhaar (Manager: Infrastructure Development and Planning) I am writing this communique on behalf of the LSRC Athlone campus as the residence and transport officer As the nursing students of CPUT/WCCN the residence and transport issue is a very big challenge for us. We daily suffer a state of confusion where no one wants to take responsibility. When we go to WCCN management we are often told that we are CPUT students therefore the university must take responsibility for all our transport and residential issues. When we go to CPUT we are told that the building still belongs to the Western Cape department, therefore they should take responsibility. As a result of this hide and seek nothing gets done and as the students we continue to be victims. 1. Transport: In the past there used to be a shuttle to transport students from the Heideveld train station as early as 5:30 in the morning in order for them to catch the buses departing from campus to the different clinical facilities. Early this year this exercise was stopped and Mr Mpambane once gave a rationale that it was stopped because in all the other campuses there is no bus fetching students from the train station, forgetting that it is justifiable for other campuses not to have this transport because in all the other campuses the classes starts from 8:30 and there are no students at the train station as early as 5:00 like it is the case here in Athlone Campus. This year many students were robbed with knives and even at gunpoint as it is expected in an area like Manenberg/Heideveld and as the LSRC we feel that as students we are the main stakeholders of the university and without us there is no university, therefore our lives should not at any given time be compromised by something that can easily be prevented by the university. Residence: The fees are increasing annually but the state of our residence is still the same if not worse than we found it in 2011. No one wants to take responsibility for maintenance but student money is deducted annually for residence fees. There is nothing to entertain students like in other campuses where there are student centers with games and pool tables where students can relax. In our campus its only books, sleep, eat and work. I would therefore like propose that you schedule a meeting between your office and the entire LSRC Athlone Campus so that we can find ways in which we can best resolve all these issues and also get clarity on who is actually suppose to take responsibility and hold that person responsible for such I hope that this communique will reach your undivided attention Regards Zandre Leonards Res and Transport LSRC Athlone Campus
