Dear Mr. Greenwald, I have been a fan of Brave New Films since seeing Outfoxed, which is a favorite documentary, right up there with the best. If I may be so presumptuous, I would like to propose a subject for your consideration and tell you why I am doing so. Both when he died and when his presidential library was opened, the GOP made such a hoopla about Ronald Reagan one would think he was the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. They continue to hold him up as some sort of hero on the order of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (although plenty of Dixiecrat Republicans dis the latter, and I recently terminated a 35-year-old friendship because the guy kept saying Lincoln was the worst occupant of the White House). I think it is high time the heroic Reagan was taken off his pedestal. He did not bring down the Berlin Wall: it was inevitable because the Russian incursions in places like Afghanistan and the takeover of the government by the oligarchs, draining the national treasury, made maintenance of the Soviet empire impossible. The Iran-Contra affair was criminality by proxy. Since Oliver North was operating the illegal operation from the White House basement, Reagan either knew all about it and was thus complicit, or knew nothing about it and was thus weak and ineffectual. The incursion into the tiny Caribbean island of Grenada was conducted not to rescue a few medical students at university there (the casus belli) but to demonstrate our military-industrial hegemony, setting an example for nations like North Korea. This paints Reagan as a make-believe (actor) warmonger. Perhaps you would prefer waiting until Nancy dies, but this is a movie that MUST be made, lest the Koch Brothers and others keep funding efforts to make us ignorant of the trickle down economic falure that was Reagans phony version of fiscal responsibility. The film should go back to his California days and examine his poor management of that state. When a controversy arose about whether the famous California Redwoods should be opened to logging interests he infamously said, Why not? If youve seen one tree, youve seen them all. We need to stop GOP apotheosis of Ronnie and show him as he really was!
