Dear Pizza Express, (and any other establishment who finds this applicable) There has been a flurry of activity here on FB in the past few days with regards to a pizza offering and starter (dish of veg) you are kindly offering us at your chains. Well, apparently some of them, as according to information I have read, its not going to be in every branch. Correct me if Im wrong. Oh and one of your sorbets is animal friendly too. Great. No. I lied. Its not. Much excitement in the vegan community, and also much disappointment. Always a flip side. I am with the latter. Your stereotypical offering of salad on a plain tomato based pizza is nothing new. Shock, gasp, horror. What? You are not the first? No. And you wont be the last. Many outlets will do a plain (animal free) base with tomato sauce and vegetables. Many outlets will do a pile of veg in a dish, call it a starter and charge an astronomical price for it. You are just joining the ranks. Now I happen to love a cheeseless pizza, but with the offerings available on the market now a little bit of effort would have gone a long way. Yes, vegans LOVE a cheese pizza. You have many to choose from, here is a small example: Violife, Veganic, Vegusto, V Bites, Sheese, Ive happened to put the most popular in the front three - hint hint - and there are many wonderful home made cheeses too. But they take a wee bit of effort. But the question is: Are we worth it? Thank you for continuing with the stereotype of vegans eat, and are happy to eat, boring and bland food. Thank you for the sniggers from fellow diners at their wrongly perceived vegans cant have cheese tossing a nod our way while asking, Enjoying that are you? Looks lovely. in strong tones of sarcasm, when what they really mean is, How is the cardboard, never eat that in a million years. Most importantly, thank you very much for missing an opportunity for non vegans to taste awesome animal friendly fare. Thats what really matters, because if bland and boring was all we had, we would take it, for them, but its not. I understand you are not a vegan establishment, far from it, but I still wanted to note my thoughts on it. There is also nothing wrong with salad, should we choose to eat it, but eating out is a special occasion for most and we want to treat ourselves to something calorific and that has felt like a treat! Gone are the days that we are happy with baked beans on dry jacket potato, fruit salad, dry white rice, tomato sauce and roasted - the - life - out - of - them vegetables with over compensating pile of soggy onions, salad and chips, oh the obligatory chip offering. How we all know and love you well. So please, add the plain pizza and vegetables to those ranks. Get some cheese, vrooom it up a bit, give it some pizazz! Ditch the sorbet for an awesome sumptuous dessert. Banish the pile of vegetables starter for something with a little imagination! Why not poll your customers? Ask them what they want. Totally easy to do! Yes, the vegans are demanding more, we are no longer baby in the corner. Because no one puts the vegans in the corner, even if you sit us on a back table, we are not waiting for our turn on the dance floor, we are taking it. We are out loud and proud and coming for you, in a non violent manner, of course. So should you choose to eat in a non vegan establishment, there are many now offering vegan friendly options. While many will be happy with it, and no doubt you will get customers, there are many that are revolting. You can find us at a competitor. PS Let it say vegan, if it is, on the menu, I hear its saying vegetarian. We arent vegetarian. We have a few in our awesome ranks who are rather shy and wont ask questions, they will think its vegetarian. They wont eat it. Spare them a few blushes and awkwardness, shuffling in seats and staring at the floor. Ta. PPS I hope you will take this with the spirit intended, I am serious, this menu does need looking at, but this was written with a wry smile on my face and a raised eyebrow. Regards, A sassy vegan who loves pizza with cheese, sumptuous desserts, a little imagination and creativity and is not afraid to ask for it.
