Dear Plaza Community: We know you have a lot of questions, and we want to answer them as thoroughly as possible. Before we cover the details, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your incredible patience and the overwhelming responses of love and support you have given the college over the course of this challenging week. We are so happy to reiterate that, in spite of such a devastating fire, there were no critical injuries or fatalities. Property, materials, and documents can be replaced; human life cannot. Nevertheless, we must inform you that the fire in Jackson Heights completely demolished our campus, rendering the building unsafe for our return. While the cause remains unknown at this time, it is certain that the fire did not originate within Plaza College. However, there is hope. In only four days, the Callahan family and the Plaza College administration have established a solid plan to rebuild and charge forward into the future. In short, Plaza College is going to be stronger than ever. Let me tell you how. First, we want you to know how you can contact us and where the college’s new home is located. Aside from the recent fire, for the past two years, Plaza College has been planning to relocate our campus to Forest Hills Tower. Our new campus is still scheduled to open in July 2014; in the interim, we have secured temporary space within the building, which will open at 9:00 a.m. this coming Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Our address is: 118-35 Queens Blvd. Suite 105. Forest Hills, NY 11375. In order to reach us by transportation, simply take the E or F trains to Union Turnpike stop. We are on the north side of Queens Boulevard. Understandably, all of you want to know about your classes for the Spring term. Due to the loss of our Jackson Heights campus, it is impossible to start a traditional 15-week semester on May 1. In order to protect your academic progress and student aid, all actively registered students will be placed immediately on an official summer recess. This means that you will have a variety of summer study options, which will be credible towards your degree. We will be discussing these options with you in the coming days. Above all, we want you to know that we are here for you. Therefore, beginning this Tuesday, April 29, we will be personally calling every student. Our highest priority is to provide you immediate access to Plaza resources: Student Services, the Learning Center, Academic Resources, Career Services, and Financial Aid. In addition, counseling will also be available. If you need any of these services, or if you have any questions you’d like to address in person, please do the following: -Starting this Monday, April 28th, call our original phone number (718-779-1430) to make an appointment. -We will begin seeing students on Wednesday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m. Lastly, many of you have been sending us messages all week saying “PLAZA STRONG.” We ask you to please continue that. Keep the faith. Know that we are working around the clock to get the college through this difficult period, which will lead to the Fall 2014 semester in our new, beautiful campus. Your Provost, Charles E. Callahan III
