Dear Rich, Two years ago, Malala was a 15-year-old schoolgirl - TopicsExpress

Dear Rich, Two years ago, Malala was a 15-year-old schoolgirl in northwest Pakistan studying subjects like chemistry and history. On October 9, 2012, the Taliban shot her in the head for advocating for girls right to education. Today shes the survivor of this brutal assassination attempt and the just-announced winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Indian childrens rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. Both are true inspirations for standing up for childrens rights and a powerful reminder of what youth activism can achieve. Malala is one of millions of women and girls around the world who face violence and barriers to education and other human rights because of their gender – from Pakistan, to Guatemala, to the United States. Together, we can pressure governments to hold perpetrators accountable and advocate for laws and policies that advance womens and girls human rights. Today is a day to celebrate – and to recommit ourselves to ending violence and discrimination against women and girls. Take a moment today to send Malala a note of congratulations! As Malala has shown us, with courage and activism, anything is possible. Thank you for being a light for all. Sincerely, Margaret Huang Deputy Executive Director, Campaigns and Programs Amnesty International USA
