Dear all my non-Chinese friends, Hong Kong’s democracy is at its most critical moment. In 1984, Britain and China signed an agreement where Hong Kong is guaranteed a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defence affairs for 50 years following the handover in 1997. However, in August 2014, China said it will allow direct elections in 2017, but voters will only be able to choose from a list of pre-approved candidates. Today, the Hong Kong police used excessive violence on the peaceful protesters. As a normal citizen in Hong Kong, I cannot do much but hope to call on more international attention.
