Dear fellow students As the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal - TopicsExpress

Dear fellow students As the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Student Representative Council we would like to thank all students who were united against the University system, fighting for their rights and access to education in particular. The pressure of student protests did put pressure on the University. Fellow students after robust and lengthy negotiations on Monday (08 Sep 2014), we wish to inform you that the SRC and Management reached a compromised consensus with regards to registration fee for tuition. The registration fee for tuition will increase by R 500 in 2015 academic year. This means the registration fee for tuition will be R3 750 from 2015 as opposed to R6000 that was initially proposed by the University Management through the Chief Finance Officer. The R 3 750 is inclusive of the acceptance fee to first year students. Considering the circumstances, the SRC fought very hard in meetings trying to convince the Management. We can never celebrate any form of fee increment since we all want free education in our lifetime but unfortunately the current state of economy in South Africa dictates otherwise. We were also under immense pressure to find an amicable solution so that we get our attention back to our academic work as students. After lengthy discussions and debates last week, the University Management came back to us on Sunday (07 Sep 2014) and reported that the sessional dates for 2015 must be revised as per our demand as students with an aim of postponing the registration closing date in 2015. This means that the closing date for registration in 2015 is no-longer the 06th of February 2015. There is now a task team consisting of SRC members, Executive Management Members and College representatives. The task team will amend the 2015 academic calendar then table recommendations to a special Senate for approval. The first meeting of this task team sat on the 09th of Sep 2015 since the task team was formed on the 08th of Sep 2015. We can confirm that there is progress being made by the task team but students will be consulted through various structures for their input. As the SRC we want to emphasise that we condemn any form of violence and vandalism of infrastructure by police or anyone else. The SRC supports the suspension of student protests action that has been going on across campuses since last week. Equally we want the University Management to withdraw police and other security that were deployed across campuses. We want our campuses to get back to normal so that the University is conducive for teaching and learning. We wish to remind all students that we have lost a lot of time while we were fighting for our rights. Therefore, we urge all students to try and catch up on their academic work since this is the critical time of the year. According to 2014 academic calendar, exams begin on the 30th of October 2014. The SRC continues to be committed in championing the interests and issues of students. We hope that we have dealt successfully with the two recent “burning issues” and we continue dealing with many other issues concerning us as students. We have set on-going meetings to resolve other outstanding issues concerning students. As the SRC we plead to the University Management not to prosecute any student for engaging in a peaceful protest. Issued by UKZN SRC Sithabiso Mthethwa Vuyolwethu Zondo President General Secretary General
