Dear friends. I have a favour to ask. Please petition/send letters to your local member to stop the proposed closure of residential disability services at Stockton and Tomaree. My sister has been a resident at stockton centre for over 35 years. These centers are nothing like the govt. is making out. I have actually heard one local member refer to stockton as an asylum!...(a term not used for years)....what they choose to forget is the centre was refurbished a few years ago. Gone are the dormitory wards and appalling conditions that existed in the 70s. my sister has her own bedroom, and a safe and secure environment with round the clock care. No one, and I mean NO ONE can say that my sister will be safe, secure, and free from discrimination in a community home. Would you turn a blind eye to a naked man or women in the front yard of a house in your street? And would you say nothing if woken by a blood curdling scream from the house next door at 3am?! (These are just some of the perceived antisocial behaviours that some clients are unable to control). These clients will end up prisoners in their community housing, ignored and forgotten!...I beg you all to do something about it while we still can. My motivation is to keep my sister in the safe secure environment that she is used to, and not a prisoner in a community house, exposed to discrimination, crime, potential assault, and neglect just so the govt. can profit from selling prime real-estate!
