Dear friends, On U R Ananthamurthys statement on Modi & - TopicsExpress

Dear friends, On U R Ananthamurthys statement on Modi & position of our writers v/s politicians in our society. No one should engage un parliamentary language / show impatience against any one in a free country like ours, we all have rights to express our views. It may not be a good idea again to ridicule the writers like U R Ananthamurthy who actually said “I cannot live in a country where Modi becomes PM”. It was symbolic and a satirical statement against the context of right wing politics taking the center stage in a diverse / plural country like India. Instead he was misinterpreted. For information – URA has been an moral voice against the evils since beginning. He was one of the few from writers community openly against Emergency – when even Da Ra Bendre and Kushwant singh on the other hand supported emergency. For which Bendre & Kushwant were not bad – it was just their personal position. But URA, even in his ill health state – has shown the moral guts to state his position on Modi. After all – another important thing – in our enthusiasm to support political leaders – why should be denigrate writers , artists , thinkers – for it is their work that is permanent in socio cultural imagination of a society / country, where Politicians come and politicians go in a particular temporal sense. Ask ourselves questions – Whether People remember Kuvempu, Bendre , Karanth , Raj Kumar or the Chief Ministers of their times. Shakespeare, Wordsworth or the name of the King or the queen of their time in UK? But there might however be some instances where politicians are remembered for their work outside of their politics too (Literature, art, sculpture) like Nehru, Churchill, PVN, Vajpayee, I K Gujral, Kengal Hanumanthiya.
