Death, Is that the End? And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after that the judgment: Hebrews 9:27 Death is a word that we do not want to hear about and try to keep it out of our thoughts. Why is death such a dreaded thing in our lives? Many times we hear said, (he or she) was in so much pain, or life just was not worth living anymore. Death is a blessing for them. Is this really true? Is there no more pain after death? What happens to us when we die? We have so many questions, but it is hard to get an answer to them. Where can we get the answer to all these questions, which cause so much anguish in this world and our own minds? As in all learning we need a textbook that would make us look in the right direction. The answers are in the textbook, which God has given us, namely the Bible (God’s inspired Word) praying that God the Holy Spirit may enlighten our heart and mind to understand what He is telling us! Already in Genesis 3:19 God speaks to Adam and the Woman, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” It would seem when reading this text it says that our bodies will die and return to dust. That’s the end, is it not? Verse 7 of Genesis 2 says, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living soul.” So the body dies and returns to the dust but where does the soul go? Again God’s word tells us in Ecclesiastes 12:7, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” This shows us what will happen when our bodies die, but still leaves a nagging question is there life after death? We read in Job 19:26-27, “And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh I shall see God. Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. ” This would have me believe that even though my body returns to the dust somehow it shall be resurrected because a soul without a body is incomplete. Our text says that there is a judgment after death. Revelation 20:12-15 says, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and the death and hell delivered up the dead which where in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosesoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. ” Using God’s Holy Word we have proven that death is not the end, but in many ways only the beginning! How should we live our short life? Certainly not hoping that the Bible is not true and going on as if and living as if God does not exist! What should we do knowing that death is imminent? Let us heed God’s warning as we read in Hebrews 3:15, “While it is said, To-day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.” Every breath is a gift from the Lord; let us live each day as if it is our last to His honor and glory, knowing that He is our benefactor, loving God above all and our neighbor as ourselves.
