December 13 The Giant | 1 Samuel 17:1-50 Key Verse | 1 Samuel 17:37-40, 49 “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.” The Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine….Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead and he fell facedown on the ground. Ornament | Slingshot It would be many years before David would become king. During this time, the Israelites frequently were at war with a group of people living nearby called the Philistines. Before one battle, the Philistine champion, a giant named Goliath, came forward and challenged the Israelites. He told the Israelites to send someone to fight them. If Goliath won, the Israelites would become subjects of the Philistines, but if the Israelite won, the Philistines would become subjects of the Israelites. But the Israelites were all too afraid to fight Goliath because he was more than nine feet tall. One day, David came to bring food to his brothers who were in the army. He saw Goliath making fun of the Israelites and asking for someone to fight. But David was not afraid. He volunteered to fight Goliath. Even though Saul discouraged him, David knew that God would give him the power to fight. So he went before Goliath, armed only with five stones and a slingshot. When Goliath came forward to fight him, David slung a stone at Goliath and it killed him. Years later, after Saul died, David became the king. Even though he was not a perfect king, David was called a man after God’s own heart. He knew, even as a boy, that whatever power he had came from God. Later, the prophets would tell the people that a new king would come, a descendant of David, to rule again on David’s throne and to save the people. That person would be Jesus, who was called the son of David. Pray together, thanking God for the power he gives us when we trust him.
