December 18, 2014 “The aboriginal people have been studied to death,” says Oppal, a former attorney general who heard 93 days of testimony from 85 witnesses to form his report. “I think it’s time we started putting action behind all the words and all the rhetoric. What we need now is action.” He says it’s time to turn attention to protecting vulnerable women. “There is no great mystery behind what the root causes are,” he says. “I think we have to start dealing with homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness – all those things tied with poverty.” He says everyone, including the aboriginal community, bears some responsibility in addressing those issues.
