Defination of Jamai Sasthi 2013, a Famous Festival in West Bengal Jamai Sasthi is one of the famous festivals in West Bengal. Actually this day is dedicated to the son-in-law. In this state this day is regarded as auspicious. In most of the families parties are organized to dedicate to the son-in-laws. To mark this occasion grand feasts are also organized. This festival is one of the important parts of tradition and rich culture of West Bengal. This festival is celebrated to make bonding between a son-in-law and his in-laws. This is a traditional festival which is originated before many years ago. In Jyestha month of Hindu calendar this festival is observed on 6th day of shukla paksh. In Jamai Sasthi Festival 2013 all the son-in-law or jamai will treat from in-laws or ‘Shoshur bari’. Mother-in-laws have to maintain some vidhi to perform this celebration properly. They invite their son-in-laws and daughters and cook various types of delicious dishes that consist of Hilsa fish for them. In ‘shoshur bari’, mother-in-law welcome son-in-law in a traditional way with a yellow thread is tied on his right hand wrist and ‘Phota’ on his forehead. The thread is called ‘Shashti suto’ which is actually colored with turmeric. It is believed that this thread has the blessing of Ma Shasti to take care of children. Mother-in-law is presented gifts and she too gives gifts, fruits and sweets to son-in-law. Jamai Sasthi Festival 2013 will also be observed as Aranya Shashti. In Jamai shashti the houses are decorated with various things. Favorite delicacies of the son-in-law are prepared. Bengalis are famous for their exotic dishes and love for food. Variety of fish delicacies and sandesh, famous Bengali sweet are must be included in dishes. On this particular day on-in-laws are the center of everyone. He loves and enjoys the attention from his in-laws.
