U.S. Embassy Tokyo - Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Typhoon Wipha The Embassy alerts U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Japan, including Okinawa and its outlying islands, that the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Japan Meteorological Agency are tracking Typhoon Wipha (Typhoon No. 26/25W) in the Western Pacific. As of October 15, Typhoon Wipha is changing to a north-northeast trajectory through the Western Pacific Ocean as a Category 2 storm. Affected areas can expect to see sustained winds of between 65 and 75 knots (approx. 75-86 mph) and gusts of up to 95 knots (approx. 109 mph) late Tuesday, October 15, and on Wednesday, October 16. Current forecasts say that Typhoon Wipha will affect most of Japan, from Okinawa and its outlying islands to Hokkaido. U.S. citizens living and traveling in Japan should take this information into account.
