Democracy Isn’t Optional, Denis Decades of democratic tradition is under threat as the Napthine Government recommends the introduction of Optional Preferential Voting in Victorian State elections. An Electoral Matters Committee report, released today, contained the recommendation which was supported by Liberal MPs but opposed by National Party and Labor members. The current system of Full Preferential Voting preserves the intention of every voter and makes sure their voice is heard. Optional Preferential Voting will disenfranchise and confuse Victorian voters, increase the number of informal votes and weaken our Federal electoral system. Quotes attributable to Adem Somyurek: Shadow Minister for Electoral Reform “Denis Napthine should not want to weaken our democracy and silence the voters of Victoria.” “Under this proposed system, someone could be elected to Parliament even if they were the least-preferred candidate in an election. “Denis Napthine should be trying to fix the crisis in our health system, not trying to weaken voter’s voices.” Key Facts: ■· National Party MP Russell Northe – the Napthine Government’s new Minister – opposed the Liberal Party’s Optional Preferential Voting system in his submission. ■· Optional Preferential Voting confuses voters. The rate of informals in New South Wales and Queensland is higher than the national average. These states do not enforce full preference allocations in State Elections, but do for Federal Elections.
