Denial is obviously not just a river in Africa. There is MAJOR public support for dropping the exploitative orca shows at SeaWorld--just see GOOGLE for the many articles and the hundreds of comments. AB 2140 (by Assemblymember Richard Bloom) will be assigned to the ASSEMBLY WATER, PARKS & WILDLIFE COMMITTEE for a hearing in either late March or early April. Committee chair is Assemblymember Anthony Rendon. The other 14 members (10 Democrats, 5 Republicans) are: Frank Bigelow, Travis Allen, Raul Bocanegra, Brian Dahle, Paul Fong, Jim Frazier, Beth Gaines, Mike Gatto, Jimmy Gomez, Lorena Gonzalez, Adam Gray, Jim Patterson, Freddie Rodriguez and Mariko Yamada. HOW YOU CAN HELP - Support letters for AB 2140 are needed NOW. ALL STATE LEGISLATORS MAY BE WRITTEN C/O THE STATE CAPITOL, SACRAMENTO, CA 95814. We cannot allow unfounded fears of job and revenue loss trump the REAL issues: animal welfare, compassion, ethics and morality. SeaWorld has done much good for marine animals over the years. They can certainly continue to do so without exploiting the orcas (the largest member of the dolphin family). In the wild, orcas live in extended family groups--the females never leave their mothers, for life. The pods can range hundreds of miles daily seeking wild-caught prey. Nor do the pods mix. Some researchers say that each pod has its own distinctive language. Contrast that with their life of deprivation in a tiny concrete box, taken from their family group, and fed a steady diet of frozen fish, most normal behaviors seriously curtailed....One can only imagine the trauma caused by their echo-location bouncing off those concrete walls....a true Crime Against Nature. The orcas (and all other captive cetaceans) deserve better. And so does the public. Please write those letters. x Eric Mills, coordinator ACTION FOR ANIMALS Oakland
