Denomination = the action of naming or classifying something; a name or designation, esp. one serving to classify a set of things. from Latin denominat- ‘named,’ from the verb denominare, from de- ‘away, formally’ + nominare ‘to name’ (from nomen, nomin- ‘name’). [as in to name-away something] Why do we desire to name or label others? Traditionally it is for easy and quick reference, but it is primarily to facilitate division. People seek to label you so that they can put you in a box of their own understanding. This makes dealing with the box easier than dealing with the person. Contrastly the Hebraic concept of naming (shem) deals with testimony and authority. It is how one is known, or another way what we are heard by (as it shares a root with shema = hear and obey). It is interesting that among Judaic sects that find many things to divide and argue about the Torah is a unifying element. The many translations of the Bible doesnt have this effect on the various denominations of Christians. In fact there are more denominations of christians than there are translations; more even than there are recognized verses in the Bible. I believe this is because in the Judaic historical account the scribes would not deviate in the slightest from that which they were copying. Nothing was to be added, removed, or changed. Between Judaic-Christians and Jewish believers, the Torah should still be a unifying element, but sadly it often isnt. How can this be? The Torah is still the Word of God (YHVH). The Messiah certainly held the Torah to be the blessed Word of HaShem. Why do we feel the need to separate us and them even to the point of profaning either 1) the Word of God or 1) the Messiah, Son of God? If we have the Torah but not the Messiah we have but a partial revelation, and if we have the Messiah but not the Torah we also have a partial revelation... who does this benefit? In short the adversary, and no one.
