Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 34:14 How do we pursue peace? Hebrews and Romans both refer to God as the God of peace and Ephesians that Jesus Himself is our peace; this means that peace is not at all about people, places or circumstances but peace is always about the presence of God. Jesus said Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Making peace is not about convincing people, its not about making situations better, soothing hurt or accepting blame; peace is not when turmoil ceases it is when Gods presence is evident, Gods Word is obeyed and truth is cherished. I realize that I have gone about pursuing all wrong in many situations of my life, I have prayed for someones opinion to change, for my hurts to fade, for time to heal wounds or for things to just be gotten over but what peace cant be about things getting better it has to be about God being glorified, hearts being changed and truth being cherished. I have to pursue peace with God before I can consider peace with anyone else and I do that by asking Him to search my heart, reveal His love and mold me in His righteousness. Peace is about Gods presence, but not how we often define it, meaning how it makes us feel; its about God being in control, God being trusted and God being followed. When David wrote this Psalm he was in hiding because Saul was trying to find him and kill him, he had to pretend to be insane so that the King of Gath would send him away from his kingdom, he had no circumstances of peace and yet he pursued it by pursing God. The pursuit of peace will lead us into some difficult place and some trying seasons but it will always be done in following the Shepherd who not only gives peace but who is Himself peaces very definition. The need for peace is a revelation of the need for Jesus, pursue peace today and He will give rest to your weary soul long before and long after there is a change to your troubling circumstances.
