Depression is on the rise, why? I would say its a deficit caused by peoples inability to take control of their lives contrasted against the extreme profits of the wealthy literally capitalizing on peoples anxiety and feelings of hopelessness. As displayed by the recent election results over a third of New Zealanders (more than the number of people that voted to elect National, which speaks volumes) have simply lost faith in New Zealands ability to govern itself democratically. These apathetics are not a statistic that should be brushed aside. This is a silence that should be deafening, and it is to those that actually have the vision to see further into the future than their next debt payment (which I might add is a fantastic pacification technique, well played 1%). So while everyone goes to the mall, those of us with the ability to actually give a shit get depressed. I am sorry, but my fear is real no matter how many people want to bury thier heads into the sand. Im tired of worrying, but Im trapped, and no amount of antidepressants is gonna divorce my head from reality enough to consider otherwise. Placing people into chemical induced optimism is a pretty crap answer to our societies problems. The fallacy of human nature being static is a corrosive idea that permeates every facet of our existence. We can change. I have to believe this. Otherwise I will be forsaking not only the future of my kids, family and friends, but all of humanity. To those that say I shouldnt wear the weight of the world on my shoulders, well, maybe if we all had the strength to hold it together, farseers and the disillusioned alike wouldnt be getting depressed in record numbers. But since the strength has be sapped out of the body politic by a combination of rampant capitalistic neo liberal fundamentalism and political resignation, we will just have to fight it out and hopefully our kids kids get the opportunity to look back at us and laugh. //rant over.
