Despite all fanciful adjectives one could suggest to describe another, any and all recollection of a person always boils down to a mere impression. May not always be a first impression, but an impression nonetheless - a grasp of a persons essence roughly drawn from an encounter or accumulation of encounters. This is how we come to know what someone means to us, or better yet, how we attribute a value to another being. Language, John Berger argues,operates in the same manner. So ought we not evaluate everything we read with the same curiosity and eagerness for depth as we do against our lovers and family or even strangers whom we stare just because...?
