Devotional: 20 June 2014 Want true prosperity, Don’t Play Games with God (World cup edition) Scripture for the day: Acts 5: 1-11 Its season of FIFA world cup and I know many of us are following watching different game style from participating countries. There are four kinds of games we play with God as follows: The ‘Nigerian’ Game: This is the game of integrity. In Act 5, Ananias and his wife sold their property and brought the money to support the gospel. But they did not do it with integrity, and it cost them their lives. God abhor dishonesty. You can’t falsify document at work, change figures, get involved in shady and shoddy businesses, and expect God’s blessing. He said: “There is a curse in the house of a thief”. If you want true prosperity, stop the ‘Nigerian’ game. The ‘Pentecostal’ Game: This captures people who give in church but are not spiritual, and at the other extreme are those who are spiritual but do not give. Both are not blessed. Your giving must be accompanied with spiritual exercise for it to yield increase (II Tim. 5:7). Three forms of spiritual exercise to be involved in: fasting, praying and studying the word. The Lazy Man’s Game: If you do not work, what will God bless? He said “I will bless the works of your hand”. The Bible says: He that would not work should not eat. The other end of this game involves people who work very hard and put their confidence in their work. God is your source, not your work. The work is just a channel. God want us to work so he can use it as a channel to bless us. Don’t because of the work disconnect from the source. The ‘Adventist’ Game: As Seventh Day Adventist Christians we believe in returning our tithe. And so a lot of people give tithe but don’t give offering. The instruction in Malachi 3 includes both the tithe and offering. More often, we have come to see tithe as a ‘burden’ and so we quickly pay it to be relieved. If you pay tithe and don’t pay offering, you ‘rob’ yourself and limit your blessings. Your offering should be more than your tithe.
