Di Robert Bauval MYSTERY OF THE ALATRI FERTILITY TEMPLE: In the beautiful medieval Italian town of Alatri there is an ancient temple, claimed to be from Roman times by archaeologists but strongly contested by other researchers who say its prehistoric. The temple is located on a high mount with a 360 degrees panoramic view of the region, clearly implicit of astronomical observations, solar and stellar. It surrounded by a huge stone wall made from massive blocks, many cut polygonally, and some weighing more than 15 tons. The most instrguing feature is a staircase located on the north side of this wall. According to local researchers it is positioned and inclined in such a way as to receive the sun rays at equinox times, probably at the Spring Equinox marking the time of fertility. This hypothesis is supported by three carved stone male genitals which can be clearly seen on the lintel of the door into the staircase. They may be marking the two solstices and with the middle upright one denoting the Spring Equinox. The local researchers also believe that there is a link to Orions belt and the temple. youtube/watch?v=80r1bP9szQk
