Did You Know that the famous Hollywood sign once read "HollywoodLand"? Located in Los Angeles, California, the Hollywood sign was originally erected in 1923 and it read "HOLLYWOODLAND". Its purpose at the time was to advertise the name of a new housing development and it was meant to be up for only a year or two. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce decided to rebuild the sign. They removed "LAND" so that the sign would read "HOLLYWOOD" and reflect the district, as opposed to the "Hollywoodland" housing development. In 1978, rock star Alice Cooper started a public campaign to restore the severely deteriorated sign; nine donors came forward, each paying to have one of the letters restored.
