Did a little local archeology today. Grabbed my walking stick and hat, and pointed Clementine the bus up the road to Montour Falls. There I walked the lower loop trail of the Cathrine Valley Trail that follows the original towpath of the Chemung Canal. If you know what to look for you can see the canal its self off the East side of the trail. Its mostly an overgrown ditch that looks a little to uniform to be natural. There is a section that still has water in it, and about a half mile down the trail there is the remnants of Lock number 6. Theres really not much there except a stone wall at the end of a big hole, but it was fascinating to think that those stones were put there in 1832, and are still there. And, how that spot was full of activity for over 40 years of commerce and travel, and now it is in the middle of the woods almost completely forgotten.
