Did you know???? Clares Law starts in Hertfordshire Now, members of the public who fear they, or someone they know, may be in danger from their partner will be able to ask police if that person has a history of violence and abuse. From April 1, the Domestic Abuse Disclosure Scheme, or “Clare’s Law”, came into effect across Hertfordshire. The new law came out of the case of Clare Wood from Greater Manchester, who was murdered in 2009 by her former partner, who had three previous convictions under the Protection from Harassment Act. The new legislation provides both individuals and agencies, such as child protection services, with the right to ask police for the disclosure of any relevant information regarding an individual. If police checks show that a person may be at risk of domestic abuse from their partner, the police will consider disclosing the information. Detective Superintendent Michael Hanlon, head of the County Community Safety Unit, said: “We welcome the introduction of Clare’s Law in Hertfordshire. This scheme is about prevention and exploring new ways of protecting victims of domestic abuse. It helps individuals make an informed decision on whether or not to continue a relationship and will provide help and support to them when making that choice. It will enable police to act in the best interests of those people who believe they are at risk of violence by sharing information of a partners’ violent past.” “Domestic violence is often very much hidden behind the closed doors of our communities and it is one area of crime statistics where I am encouraged to see the numbers going up – because all the evidence suggests domestic abuse is chronically under-reported by victims. “Increased reporting numbers shows us that people who do need help are feeling increasingly able to come forward, which is the first step. And if people need help to avoid falling into such relationships in the first place, then surely any measure such as Clare’s Law is a positive step.” “We are already doing a lot of work in relation to tackle domestic abuse, which takes many forms including controlling and coercive behaviour. We are working to help victims and perpetrators change their behaviour – Clare’s Law is another very powerful tool which we now have that will assist us in our continuing work to tackle domestic abuse.” WARNING SIGNS: • Very persistent at beginning of relationship; Moving the relationship along too quickly; • Tells lies e.g. getting a high paid job and needs you to CONFIDE all your secrets!! These will be used against you in the future; • Interested in your job and earning capacity – wanting to freeload off you and find out about your savings with some guise about all their money when they have none! • Buying you gifts, often stolen from a former partner; They will abuse customer service workers-shouting and abusing them, too cowardly to do it to friends or others; • Telling you all their ex’s are in love with them! Not true…..they are all glad to be free of him and only sad that YOU are falling for the lies e.g. I work in TV and films when they are just fantasists, wasters and have not worked for years, just lived off ex-partners and brutalised them and their children. In effect totally INADEQUATE MEN. • BE SAFE - ASK THE POLICE IF YOU HAVE HEARD ANY RUMOURS OR HE HAS TOLD YOU IT WAS ALL THE EX’S FAULT. If they have a conviction and restraining order and are doing community service ask yourself why?????
