Did you know you can get gout from high amounts of fructose (from table sugar or high fructose corn syrup)?! This correlation was found almost by accident in a study from Dr. Hyon Choi, M.D. of the Boston University School of Medicine, on 46 000 men with no previous history of gout. Foods that are rich in fructose such as fruits like apples, oranges and particularly fruit juices (higher levels of fructose) are linked with an increased risk of developing gout. Whole fruits contain vitamins and antioxidants that decrease the hazardous effects of fructose. So dont juice your fruit - eat 2-3 serves a day & thats more than enough to get all the nutrients you need as well as the very important component of fibre, necessary for better protection against colorectal cancer. The Australian Eat for Health guide recommends we only have juice occasionally and only 1/2 cup for these very reasons.
