Disbursement of Ex-gratia for crop damages and human –animal conflict in Kitam, South Sikkim Namchi 17th July: Ex-gratia under 100% grant in Aid under Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitat at Kitam Bird Sanctuary, South Sikkim” was distributed to aggrieved villagers of fringe villages of Kitam Bird Sanctuary whose crops were damaged by wildlife in the year 2011-12 and 2012-13. Around 170 households received relief as per their application recommended by concerned Panchayats and verification reports of the field officials of the Forest Department thereof. Shri Nischal Gautam DFO (WL) South informed that the ex-gratia in other villages would also be distributed in coming days. The programme had a presence of Shri K N Pradhan, Honourable Zilla Member, Kitam-Manpur GPU as Chief Guest. Shri N W Tamang, Conservator of Forest, Wildlife Circle , FEWMD also addressed the gathering while Shri J B Rai, Additional Director, Sericulture, FEWMD gave a valued presence. Shri Tamang highlighted different techniques to check the entry of wildlife in crop fields and the role of common villagers and Panchayats to curb the problems of wildlife menace. He also asked people to change their agriculture pattern with modern days high yielding crops which are non palatable to wildlife and which are high earning than traditional cropping. Similarly Shri K N Pradhan also gave insight from creation of the Kitam Bird Sanctuary to present stage. He informed that wildlife menace was as relevant as now even before the creation of the Sanctuary. He told that time has come that we should change our cropping pattern and match the current days need with value addition and go for crops which earns us huge profit. He asked people to leave the habit of exclusive dependence on government and try to be productive. The programme started with welcome address of Shri Nischal Gautam, DFO (Wildlife) South while vote of thanks was presented by Panchayat President, Kitam Manpur GPU. The programme showed the presence of Shri Tilak Mukhia, ACF (WL), Smt. Hari Maya Thapa, Range Officer (WL), Block Officer and Forest Guards under Kitam Bird Sanctuary, Panchayat members under Kitam Manpur GPU, Police personnel and general public. Later monitoring and inspection of works under different schemes under South Wildlife Division like FDA, TFC and Integrated developments of Wildlife Habitats under Kitam Bird Sanctuary was conducted by Honourble Zilla Member Shri KN Pradhan, Conservator of Forest (WL) FEWMD, Additional Director (Sericulture) and Panchayat President, Kitam Manpur GPU.
