Discourse’s being developed about the mass wave of Central - TopicsExpress

Discourse’s being developed about the mass wave of Central America women and children entering the United States has been to this point incredibly naïve, horrible, and damaging to the safety of these human beings. For those of us who are learning about contemporary Latin America-its economic, social and political aspects- this is an opportunity to situate your self in the present. I urge you to use the education you are paying thousands of dollars for-to help develop an alternative narrative around this crisis. Begin by familiarizing yourself with the topic. Speak to others about the issue. Find spaces where you can collaborate. Find organizations that are taking action and get involved. For those of you who are entering their junior years at school or senior year- a topic like this would be great for a research project. Not only will you be able to use this incredible topic as an exit requirement but you will also have the opportunity to publish and present your work in order to contribute to an alternative narrative. But if you also can, please go down to these detention centers, find organizations, and find spaces where you can help. Merge theory and praxis. Below are some links on the things being said on the topic. *Pay attention to the narratives being developed on the current crisis, but also attacks on policies that already benefit undocumented youths in the United States, an opportunity to militarize the border and to fund more money into Central America for a crime and drug war. Look for what is not being said. Look into the websites of international organizations and NGOs such as UNICEF, UN, OAS and see if anything is being said on the topic.
