Distance between cars is important On Wednesday morning October - TopicsExpress

Distance between cars is important On Wednesday morning October 29th there was a crash involving 6 vehicles and a bicyclist. This crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. in the area of SW TV Highway and SW 160th. The crash began when a motorist was turning onto SW 160th from TV Highway and a bicyclist wearing dark colors rode in front of him. This motorist struck the bicyclist who did sustain some injuries from this collision. Because the first motorist stopped rapidly and five other vehicles were driving too closely they collided into each other. Luckily none of the other involved motorist received any injuries but most of the involved vehicles sustained major damage. We all have heard of the three second rule when it comes to driving. The problem is that so many motorists ignore this and tailgate the vehicle in front of them. At 25 mph the three second rule would equal about 111 feet and would be approximately 37 feet per second. When you break it down to this it is really not much time to react even at 111 feet. Then you throw in the distractions that motorists have now, darkness and wet pavement. This combination can and did turn out bad in this instance. It is important for motorists to be paying attention to all that is going on outside of the car. No matter how safe you drive you must be able and ready to react rapidly to what the other motorists around you do. In this specific incident it is clear that the drivers were not keeping a safe distance and were not paying proper attention. Oregon law requires that anyone who drives a motor vehicle follows another vehicle in a reason and prudent manor with due regard for the speed of the vehicle, traffic flow and condition of the roadway. If you fail to do this you could be issued a citation for following too closely and this is a class B traffic violation. The moral of this story is to keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicles you follow. We all have to work together to keep Beaverton a safe place to drive, live and visit.
