Divided powers, separation of powers, limitations and restraints on government, checks and balances - for these to be put back into balance, and for overall constitutional balance to be restored in a way that enhances liberty, the federal government needs to be a lot smaller. The federal government needs to emphasize and prioritize those powers and responsibilities that are truly within its domain (national defense, border security, etc.), while the many programs and many departments that are not constitutionally authorized should be abolished and/or de-emphasized. This will mean sharp cuts in spending, much more decentralization, and the forcing of elites to give up their entrenched bureaucratic power. For this to occur, the population must be engaged, aware, and concerned about liberty. Whatever mistakes and faults the American people have made, I have great confidence in our ability to learn from those mistakes, and restore proper constitutional government.
