Do me a favour and try this test right now: *Stand up tall, with your toes pointing straight ahead and squeeze your glutes as hard as you can *Now do the same but with your feet turned out 10 degrees In which position did you feel a bigger squeeze in your glutes- number 2. The reason for this is that by slightly externally rotating the hips, we pull the head of the femur deeper into the socket of the pelvis, creating more stability and allowing us to create more force. The take home message of this? If you want to be lifting as heavily and as safely as possible in exercises like the squat and the deadlift, you will be better served by slightly externally rotating your feet and hips than going with a toes straight ahead position. If you want to see a video of this in action, check out the clip of Kelly Starrett from mobility WOD below: https://youtube/watch?v=IAmO8AerhWY
