Do not clean the erhu strings by rubbing them hard with whichever dry cloth, because the sudden rise in temperature caused by friction will damage the strings, thus It wont be able to vibrate at its optimum state (maximum amplitude) like when its new anymore. Dont use wet cloth as well, because it will only help rusting. What you can do is, wipe the strings gently and repeat many times with dry/string-cleaner applied cloth, and thats the only way of cleaning the strings without damaging the them. :)
